Sri Lanka is also known for its wonderful beaches and if it’s not in your bucket list yet please add it right now. So if you are really looking for a beach vacation in Sri Lanka then Jan-Mar is the best suitable time especially in the Western and Southern coast. This time of the year is mostly dry and will bring you loads of sun shine. Also this is the best season for whale watching, dolphins and you can see many varieties of turtles and we bet no one would prefer missing those life time experiences.
Relax in Weligama Beach
We started our ride from Nuwara Eliya and reached Weligama which was approx. 6hrs of drive!! Hell yes it was damn tiring and there were time we felt our lower back is absolutely in a paralyzed state. Also you can chose your alternate travelling option by air or train from Colombo. Weligama is located on the South coast of Sri Lanka and also offers some of its gorgeous beaches. Let us tell you this beaches are beautiful but mostly you will find them docked up with boats so it is not ideal for swimming or snorkelling. Rather you can experience some of the amazing sunrise and sunset. We faced hours of uninvited downpour in the month of March but the weather wrapped up to sun shine in next couple of hours.
Experience the Stilt Fishermen Piers in Koggala
We learned about the stilt fishing in Sri Lanka and overall process seemed very interesting to us, as we never saw or heard something such before. So basically in the coast the fishermen use an unique technique of fishing called the stilt fishing. They climb and sit on a self-made vertical pole cross bar called the ‘petta’ which is placed inside few meters from the shore and waits until they catch a fish!! Interesting right!! Ok, so I too tried my hands and local fisherman helped me climbing it. I sat on the formation for all most 20mins but my effort was all in vain. I had to climb down as my bum gave up and realized it wasn’t my cup of beverage but I was still happy. The beaches of Koggala have some of the black rock formations where we mostly spent our time and moving to the land, grabbed some coffee and enjoyed some beautiful moment gazing those inclined coconut trees.
Picturesque beaches of Mirissa
It’s one of the most famous beach destinations and also very popular for its marine life. This beach remains pretty crowded but still it’s one of our favorite. Mirissa offers wide range of everything – from stunning turquoise beaches, surf waves, whale and dolphin watching trips, great eatery joints to best of night life. Let us add the most important thing to do in Mirissa is to go for a day trip for whale, dolphin and turtle watching which we would highly recommend you all and make sure not to miss out this lifetime experience. It was a memorable day for us. A detailed blog on how, when and where you can plan your day trip for whale watching is mentioned here. Go check out!!
Climb up the parrot rock in Mirissa beach whoch is not that difficult and experience the pristine beauty of nature. Also don’t miss out hoping in some cool cafes around which offers best of food and beverages with amazing decors.
Spend some quality time in Ahangama Beach
It’s a small town in Sri Lanka and just an half an hour drive from Mirissa. The beaches in Ahangama has wide shore line spread. In addition it’s perfect for swimming and snorkelling as the water is pretty clear and transparent. The beaches of Ahangama are also very famous for surfing and other water activities.
Sunbathing in Unuwatuna Beach
If you are driving from Galle it would take 30min or less to reach Unuwatuna and approx. 3hrs from Colombo. These beaches of Unuwatuna mostly remains crowded with tourists and locals but holds best under water views and is perfect place for a beach trip. What we enjoyed the best in Unuwatuna are some lovely sea breeze, gazing the sun going down under some beautiful palm trees.
