Cape Town to Stellenbosch : One Day Itinerary For Cape Town
Stellenbosch is a town in the western cape province situated about 50 kilometres east of Cape Town which is also the second oldest settlement. We started our drive from Cape Town by 10am and self droved to the wine city which almost took 40min to reach our first destination. However you can start your watch even early so that you can utilize the maximum time of the day as most of the vineyards opens up from 9am.
We rented our car(Toyota Agya Small Hatchback) from Rentalcars which would cost around 30-40$ per day excluding petrol.
If you are not self-driving you can hire an Uber too which are readily available all over Cape Town and almost everywhere, which usually charges R7-8/Km. Simply download the Uber app from iTunes or Google Play Store for quick and easy access. You can also book Uber for pickups & drops in between all vineyards you wish to visit and pay whatever the meter says depending on the distance travelled.
Please note: if you keep the driver waiting more than five minutes, you’ll be charged a cent per second after the start of the third minute. There’s also a booking fee of $0.50(7R). Crazy!! never heard that before anywhere, make sure you don’t spare a sec of your life…
During our one night stay at Stellenbosch we have visited multiple wine farms unless our stomach and brain gave up and went for a spin! So by any chance it was not possible for us to miss that opportunity and return home without drinking gallons of wine, he-he!
I -Puja is a big big big wine lover by heart and during our stay we almost tried varieties of bottles that came our way or caught our eye.
However, you can even extend your stays for two nights so that you have enough time to explore and experience more vineyards with stunning views along the way. It’s also possible to return back to Cape Town after a day trip, but we won’t recommend that- Drink & Drive Ah! NO-NO.
You must be thinking oh girl even you guys hopped the vineyards, so as mentioned I went to the moon and stars while Riju was decent enough as he was driving! Haha- poor him.
Here comes the very important question of the day, Is Stellenbosch safe? – One Day Itinerary For Cape Town
See safety largely depends on how, where you travel and also how you approach. Petty crimes are everywhere now and cannot judge a certain area. However, Stellenbosch is relatively safe during the daylight we didn’t face any difficulties during our entire trip. The streets, cafes and shops had delighted face all around. But we heard that this city is not very safe during the nights and also not suitable to walk along lone streets where you might get attacked & mugged. We would suggest you wind up everything by 7pm and return back to room, that’s what we preferred. Mentioning below how we planned our day at Stellenbosch.
One Day Itinerary for Stellenbosch : One Day Itinerary For Cape Town
Stop 1 for the day: Wine tasting at Tokara
We went inside and there was a friendly welcome by our host. Once we choose our perfect sitting corner we were handed over a list of award-winning wines and olives which was mentioned for tastings. Tokara is a picture perfect destination which offers amazing views of vineyards and creates a perfect ambience for SSS( Swirl- Smell-Sip) to enjoy your wine. They also have a restaurant inside from where you can order your meals too.
We opted for the premium wine tasting which comprised of 4 types of wines & costed around 100R per person. We had spent good one & half hour at Tokara and it was a lovely experience as we tried wine tasting for the first time ever. Would definitely recommend visiting this vineyard for sure. You would find almost 5-8 vineyards within 5kms but we choose to try out those which had good reviews and was also recommended by our local family friends.
We started our GPS for the next destination, Delaire Graff Estate which was 5min ahead.
Stop 2 for the day: Wine tasting at Delaire Graff Estate
This was our favourite vineyard with the most picturesque and breath-taking beautiful outdoor settings, and modern interior decors facing the apostles. It felt magnificent.
On arrival we were welcomed by experienced hosts, who made sure that our needs are fulfilled with some excellent recommendations too, because the names of wines on the menu seemed alien to us. Same as previous we were handed over a set menu and we choose 3 different varieties of wine(75R) per person which we wanted to taste. By then it was almost lunch hour so we tried out their olive platter(105R) which was really sumptuous. We both are a big fan of olives & breads and this was the perfect place for us. So if you are olive lovers too like us make sure you try their range of platters, we are sure you would love it.
They also have luxurious staying option, lodges and presidential suites (from R9000 per person per night). And if you are celebrating something special this is the ideal place to be if it satisfies your budget. Ours’s didn’t work out that way! Sad.
However, body said that we might stop here, but mind said let’s explore few more! So we didn’t stop there and google for the next destination.
Stop 3 for the day: Wine tasting at Delheim
From Delaire Graff Estate it took about 20 min to reach Delheim.
This farm has beautiful surroundings and superb wines with great reviews. But that wasn’t the main reason why we went to Delheim. This was for the first time we found out that this winery offers freshly baked muffins with wines, sounds strange right?
Yes, that’s what attracted us too. By the time we reached it was already 3.30pm and we were told that their kitchen closes by 3pm. Even we asked if they were left with any muffins but to our hard luck the stock was already over. We only went for the wine tastings which they offered as a welcome drink and didn’t charged anything for that. If you wish to try out this unique combination of wine & muffins make sure to make an advance booking by calling +27218884600 or try reaching as early as possible.
Do let us know in the comment section below if you went there and how you like it. We stayed for a night in Stellenbosch and now it time for us to check in the hotel.
If you are driving back to Cape Town its better you leave Stellenbosch between 5:30-6pm as most of the vineyards shuts down by that time. Reach Cape Town finish your dinner at Camps Bay by the beach and have a good night sleep heading back to your hotel.
However, if you’re staying at Stellenbosch for 2 nights definitely check out some of the amazing vineyards at Franschhoek the next day which just lies 30min ahead and is surrounded by vineyards and beautiful mountains too. As we stayed only for a night we had to skip out that part.
Where we stayed in Stellenbosch for one night : Stellenbosch Hotels
There are multiple places to stay in the Stellenbosch which suites all budget range right from luxury hotels, guest houses to wine farms who offers lodging too.
We stayed at Ven Der Stel Manor and would highly recommend one night stay here. We booked at a range of R1100 which might vary depending on the time of year, while we booked it only for bed and breakfast. The manor really looked impressive from both inside out, its stunning.
They offer stylish presidential and superior suites, each with a private patio and also has a direct access to the garden and pool. We definitely loved the terrace, which is just perfect for sundowners overlooking the mountains. All we needed was comfortable beds with clean linen, which absolutely satisfied us to the core. So by the time we checked in it was almost 6pm and we decided to go for early dinner so that we can return back to room by 7-7:30pm. We just googled nearby eatery joints and hopped at Mugg & beans for some salads and sandwiches worth R160.
We would also highly recommend this manor hotel for their breakfast which was just mind blowing. The host prepares amazing scones for breakfast and that was the main reason why we decided to stay there, which had amazing reviews. Guys you need to try that out & thank us later!
For stays in Stellenbosch we would recommend:
Luxury: Delaire Graff Estate
Mid range: Van der Stel Manor
Budget: Airbnb
So yeah that’s all about it from Stellenbosch and next we would be posting about our another destination which is Cape Town.
