Sri Lanka is an island country located in Indian Ocean which was formally known Ceylon. However you may find so many reasons to visit this beautiful country which beholds some lovely beaches, tropical jungles, lush green mountains, waterfalls to old forts. The people there are very friendly and you can also binge on some local delicious food and fruits in every corner. In comparison to any other country Sri Lanka is less expensive and also the stay would be and easy experience, and even the denominations are easy to convert to have a fair budget without breaking deposits. Most importantly you don’t have to worry about language because generally people speaks and understands English.
The best time to visit Sri Lanka is usually from Dec – May preferably. The weather mostly changes affecting different parts of islands at different times of the year and you can visit all year round with some proper research. We had the opportunity to stay in Sri Lanka for 10 days and we visited in the month of Feb. Arriving in Sri Lanka was hassle free for us as we had booked our flight from India also there are several airlines from US, Europe and Asia which connects Colombo, Sri Lanka. We made sure to get our visas done prior to departure but it’s also possible to get visa on arrival, so we would suggest please check your country visa procedures and guidelines to make it a memorable trip and to avoid any hustle on landing. Very importantly we found out this country mostly runs on cash, though there are ATMs on all corners we would suggest you to carry sufficient cash at all times.
In this blog we would share the top attractions of Nuwara Eliya so that you can plan some incredible adventures on this island which is now slowly gearing up for ultimate tourist destination.
Explore the greens of Nuwara Eliya
On arrival we started our journey from Colombo by a rented car and directly made our way to Nuwara Eliya which is approx. 5/6 hrs drive – a long one and damn tiring!! Off course we stopped by food joints as we were already starving.
If you are not aware, Nuwara Eliya is a hill city at an altitude of 1864 mtrs and the weather mostly remains cooler than other parts so we would suggest you to be mindful while packing so that you don’t freeze without a siren. It’s one of the greenest among all cities we visited in Sri Lanka with picturesque landscapes and also a famous area for tea plantation. The next day we planned a full day trip to one of the beautiful tea estates and some amazing viewpoints. You can also go around the tea factories to get a brief idea on how the entire process – right from plucking tea leaves to our sip actually works.
Some of the tea estates also offers tea tastings, which we found to be a great thing to do overlooking the lush green stretch of tea plantation and with that soothing weather what else can you ask for? Also don’t forget to mark a visit to the strawberry fields if you are a strawberry fan like us. Enjoy strawberry milkshake there(Bonus tip)!!
Go for a walk around The Victoria Park
You can also take a stroll in this park which is bang opposite to Nuwara Eliya Post Office and which is one of the oldest and has a beautiful vintage British architecture.
It is a beautiful urban park and is also a botanical garden. There is a small river which runs through the park named as Nanu Oya. It is a home for flora and fauna and several migratory bird species. It is a green and gorgeous park to spend some time in solitary.
Visit the Moon Plains
It is also known as ‘Mini World’s End’, which is located on a sharp cliff and has an amazing view of 360 degree landscape. The area is stretched with greens till horizon and this place should not be missed during a visit.
However it is also a home for wild buffaloes, deer and occasional leopards so it’s suggested to take a guide along if you wish to go for cycling or hiking. Also you can book a safari car and go around the beautiful hill.
Watch the Sunset by Lake Gregory
To our surprise we sipped some of the best hot chocolates near by the lake cafeterias. This lake was constructed during the British period which also serves as a reservoir.
It is an amazing area to be around in the evening hours just sitting by the lake and watch the sun going down or also you can go for boat rides and jet skis if you wish. The view is one of it’s kind so don’t miss the chance.
Hike to the Ramboala Waterfalls
You may come across multiple waterfalls in Nuwara Eliya during your day trip around the city. But this waterfall is the most visited one. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes as it has a uphill hiking route surrounded by bamboo jungles at a stretch of 2/3kms approx.
