During the 20th century it was most commonly known as Cape L’Agulhas, currently called Cape Agulhas which is the geographic southernmost tip of African continent. Cape Agulhas is also the beginning of the split point of Atlantic and Indian ocean which is located 170 kilometres south east of Cape Town, also you can say that this is the point where Indian and Atlantic ocean meets. Some people says that Cape of Good Hope is the Southernmost point of Africa, while it’s the Southern Western point of African continent. How to reach Cape Agulhas : Things To Do In Cape Agulhas

The easiest way to reach Cape Agulhas from Cape town is by driving which would take approximately 2hr 30min, and on your way you can explore Gordon’s bay and Bot river if you wish to pull over. The quickest route is via N2 highway and R316.

However we directly drove to Cape Agulhas from Hermanus which took approx 1hr 50min,while we followed the coastal road all the way to Agulhas light house.

Anytime is the best time to go but be aware that it’s constantly windy there so best to time to go is during the warmer seasons from October– March.

Its definitely gives a goose bumping feeling to see the gigantic oceans hugging each other, where you can put your one foot in the Indian Ocean and the other in the Atlantic Ocean – at the same time.

Cape Agulhas region lies within the SANParks Agulhas National Park. You can choose to stay inside the park itself which has beautiful chalets. Also if you wish you can book a budget friendly hotels outside the national park as well.

We booked our stay at Agulhas Rest Camp which has 15 fully self catering chalets accommodating 2-4 people. The entry to the chalets is almost 5km away from the reception.

These chalets were really beautiful inside-out facing the ocean so close to flora and fauna, what else do you need to escape the busy city hassle. Would definitely suggest this stay.

Where to eat : Things To Do In Cape Agulhas

It would be hard to find restaurant inside the National park, however there are plenty of cafes and restaurants outside.

You can also collect some eatables or raw food from any of the supermarkets available, which you can later prepare inside the chalets kitchens.

Note: Most of the restaurants and shops here shuts down by 5pm so make sure you arrange your food before that. Inside the chalets there are also brai facility provided for your use.

The Lighthouse

If you are driving you would find the parking right nearby the old lighthouse. This is the second oldest working lighthouse in Southern Africa. The entry fee to the lighthouse is 35R person which has 71 steps leading to the top from where you get the beautiful panoramic view where the oceans meet.

Tip of Africa

While planning this trip this was surely in our bucket list. Take your picture at the southernmost tip of Africa where you can put your one foot at the border line of the Indian Ocean and the other in the Atlantic Ocean – at the same time. This is something we really enjoyed the most.

The Shipwreck

Walk along the board bridge passing the southernmost point, which would lead you to the shipwreck still standing tall there.

The Museums

You can visit Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum, Lighthouse Museum and also Elim Heritage Centre with a cost. However we decided to give it a miss.

Hike between the Fynbos

The Agulhas plain has a great diversity of flora and also has the largest extent of lowland and limestone fynbos representing unique vegetations. Although most species blooms between May and September, there are flowers to be enjoyed in any season.

Hiking Trails

There are many hiking trails available such as Spookdraai, Grootberg, Rasperpunt, Two Oceans Hiking trail and these are the picturesque hiking routes in this region.

Bird Watching

This area is a breeding site of rare coastal birds such as the African black oystercatcher, and also it is a home for many migratory birds as well. Enjoy the vast wealth of birdlife around the park, especially at the salt plains and along the wetlands.

Elim Wine Route

You can visit the Elim wine route throughout the year at the southernmost tip of Africa, which would be a complete different experience as in this harsh, windswept landscape the winemakers produce their distinctive and excellent rich favoured wines.

Swimming at Struisbaai Beach

You can have a lovely dip in the lagoon or go for a swim at Struisbaai beach or chill and do nothing.

Don’t forget to visit the Struisbaai harbour to say hello to Parrie who is an unusual attraction as he is actually a resident stingray there and a very friendly creature he-he.
