Where is Knysna : Knysna Travel Guide

Knysna is located on the coast of South Africa, to the east of Cape Town and along the famous Garden Route.
It’s an excellent choice if you’re looking for a more relaxed island getaway making it perfect for sunset cruises, sailing and water sports.

How to reach Knysna : Knysna Travel Guide

From Cape Town to Knysna it would take you almost 6 hours of driving. However we drove from Wilderness and it took us 50 min to reach. You can also choose to fly from Cape town and Johannesburg and the
nearest airport to Knysna is in George town, which is like 60km away.

While we explored Knysna on our way to Plettenberg Bay we tried to explore this town as much as we could in the limited time frame. So now we wish to share with you some of the amazing things to do in Knysna.


We would suggest you should at least spend 2 days to explore Knysna so that you don’t have have to rush on things that you wish to do and see around this town. We decided to stay in Plettenberg Bay and not in Knysna, which is just 30min ahead.

Best time to visit Knysna : Knysna Travel Guide

Weather in Knysna remains pleasant all-round the year and is perfectly suitable for planning a vacation, but the best time to visit Knysna is in between the months of February to April. Whale season starts from June to November, and chances are high to spot Humpback and Southern Right whales during this time.

  • Go up to the East Head Knysna Point

Go up to the East Head Knysna Point

We loved Knysna so much that we ended up with crazy amount of pictures. This is one of the most beautiful place on earth we have been so far, where you an see the spectacular Indian ocean coast touching the lagoon from an average height of 150m above the sea level.
It can be a bit of a mission to get there, if you are hiking good luck to you with that, however we drove till the parking which seemed challenging too(parking spaces are limited) but definitely worth the drive and effort.

Eat lunch at East Head Cafe

East Head Cafe is a very popular cafeteria across the town which is also a local landmark. Enjoy the most spectacular view while munching your meal overlooking the Knysna Heads.

Knysna Waterfront

The Waterfront is the popular hotspot for tourists where you can spend some time doing leisure activities, sip South African wine and enjoy spectacular views of the serene lagoon water.

This place is absolutely a shopping paradise with large number of fabulous unique shops and its extremely popular for bars & good restaurants.

Knysna Elephant Park

Here at Knysna Elephant Park you can see more than 40 orphaned African elephants which are rescued and raised. This would really be a good opportunity to take a nature walk with some of those incredible and huge creatures in open, isn’t it?
The park remains open 365 days a year to visitors, from 09h00 to 16h00 daily. Park entry fee for international visitors is R900 for SA residents its R750 and free for children below the age of 5.
